The Long Winter

I am obsessing over The Long Winter (Little House series) by Laura Ingalls Wilder. I wish it had nothing in common with Baltimore, but right now, it does. How did she grind the wheat in the coffee grinder to make bread? Do I need to build a false wall in my house behind which I can hide the flour a la the Wilder brothers? I certainly hope we're not shut in as long as they were. I am amazed at the amount of snow out there.

  1. Also, if you need to burn wheat stalks for heat, it is best to twist them very tightly, like Pa does.

  2. I suppose you know that yesterday was LIW's birthday. I love that book & read it frequently, along with many other books about snow & cold. I wish we in NY had gotten some of your snow. Elinor

  4. A couple of years ago, on a trip out West, I finally picked up "My Antonia" by Willa Cather. I'm glad I read it in the summer -- the chilling description of a pioneer winter would trigger nightmares on a week like this.

  5. Thanks for that recollection! After reading that book,I always thought that the Ingalls family probably regretted not staying in that dugout house on Plum Creek, which would have been a lot warmer. Back to 21st century...by comparison, our winter in typically far-harsher northern Michigan is mild this year. But I sympathize, recalling last year's almost perpetual snow. The first 50 degree day will be that much sweeter.
